Flow Induced Noise - Overview of Phenomenon

Noise Generated by a Plate in Open Flow

No acoustic space, the vortex frequency is proportional to Velocity

The Strouhal No.    =   f . t/v   =   0.2 (for this application)

(f = frequency, t = plate thickness & v = velocity)

Noise Generated by a Plate in Closed Flow

The noise generated by a plate in a closed flow system has a locked-on period which exists during part of the flow range. This is due to the frequency generated by the plate being equal to the acoustic mode of the pipe. A feedback system causes the noise level to increase.
