Pipe Branching

Picture - Pipe branches on a gas rig

The pipe geometry can be designed in such a way to attenuate certain frequencies and prevent noise from propagating past a junction. This is achieved by ensuring that a pressure node of the standing wave in the pipe is positioned at the junction. This is not always easy to engineer since the speed of sound in gas (and therefore the wavelength of a particular frequency) varies with the gas's molecular weight, temperature and pressure.
